I am personally using **cinnamon**, a great desktop environment that make GNOME3 usable (mode troll: on). Latest tests on gnome-shell are getting better results. This will need to be confirmed but I would say it's now compatible. I changed some variables in the conky script which also helped.

Using images in conky with transparency enabled is always a problem. It has been identified a long time ago but no fix has been implemented that I know of. So if you have no network and use a bright background, the image that will show will look overly white...
